A guide on the most aesthetic or quiet places to study on campus.
Being students at Michigan, it is important for us to find the best places to do work where we can easily apply the most amount of focus to our studies. There is never a time where a library, or even a work commons in one of the many buildings on campus, isn’t full of students working. With that being said, I want to introduce you to the most common yet also quiet areas that you can comfortably study on campus.
Starting off on North Campus, we have Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. There, they have the Taubman Commons, which is a big white room filled with lots of windows to provide bright natural light. There are many benches and chairs with long tables that you can find students working in. On the sides of the Taubman Commons, there are student lounges on the second and third floor where students can be found eating and studying as well. I personally love this area, especially in the mornings, because it is very quiet and bright, so it is easy to focus and knock out a ton of work. There is also the Stamps courtyard where, when it is early or late in the school year, you can find professors holding classes and students doing work for their class. Across the street from the Art and Architecture Building, is the Dude (Duderstadt Center), which is the North Campus library. They have an amazing collection of books, magazines, movies, and more that can be checked out by students whenever. There are also multiple floors that hold many different types of study areas. Whether you’re looking for a social and quiet spot, you can find any place within that building that is comfortable to study in.
Going to Central Campus, there are TONS of places to study. A popular place to go is the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. Often referred to by students as the UgLi, there are four floors and a basement where students can be found studying. The first and third floor are the loudest and are often where students go to do group projects or work with their friends. The second and fourth floors are the most quiet, and students are often focused on doing individual work. There are also multiple study rooms that can be reserved online by students so that group work can be done without disrupting others.
Another place that is very quiet and beautiful is the Law Library. That is probably the one place where it will always be quiet when you are studying. Typically students stay on the first floor to study, but there are many other places to go in the building. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful place to do work due to the amazing architecture and natural light that the windows allow inside of it. You will understand why it is so quiet there when you walk in and sit down. If you plan on going to the Law Library I would recommend going early, especially during exam season, because seats get taken quickly.
Lastly, a great study spot is Angell Hall. It is gorgeous and has a great seating area, yet it is limited. It is the smallest out of all the spaces I’ve provided, but I do think it is worth trying out. It has a similar aesthetic to the Law Library in terms of architecture and is also quiet. I recommend going there in the mornings to study because that is when the least amount of people are there.
While the University of Michigan is not limited to these places, these are my personal favorite places to do work. I hope this guide helps you in figuring out where the best place for you to study on campus is!
