Resources for First-year Students at U-M

The first year of undergraduate studies can be challenging as new students adjust to a different environment, academic expectations, and balancing life on campus. Understanding the resources available at the university can help to ease this transition. While all students benefit from campus support, first-year students in particular can gain confidence and a sense of belonging by exploring these resources early on, building a strong foundation for the years ahead. With that being said, here is your pocketbook edition of resources on campus for first-year students.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is dedicated to supporting the psychological well-being of students on campus. Located on the fourth floor of the Michigan Union, CAPS provides a range of services including counseling services, consultations, crisis services, and care management. Whether you’re looking for on-campus or off-campus counseling options, CAPS can help connect you with the right resources to meet your needs. You can also visit the wellness room, also located on the fourth floor, which offers massage chairs, sun lamps, yoga mats, games, and complimentary coffee and tea. These wellness resources are completely free for students and offer a great opportunity for students to relax in between their studies.

PaWWs and Relax

Wolverine Wellness, another one of U-M’s wellness organizations, offers students unique and comforting ways to support their mental health, though my favorite is their visits with therapy dogs. Through both scheduled appointments and pop-up events around campus, students can spend time with a therapy dog for a much needed break. Our beloved campus therapy dog is Nico, the Department of  Public Safety and Security’s therapy dog that makes appearances on campus throughout the year. These therapy dog sessions are completely free and provide a simple opportunity to take care of your well-being. Whether you are missing your pet from home or need a moment to relax, this resource is a favorite for many students. That being said, feel free to check out Wolverine Wellness’s vast collection of resources and opportunities in addition to PaWWs and Relax events.

Academic Advising

One of the most stressful parts of the first year of college can be navigating the academic landscape. Fortunately, U-M’s advising centers are here to help make that process easier. Each college within the university has its own advising center, offering guidance tailored to its students. As you begin choosing your academic path and selecting courses, academic advisors can help make those decisions much more manageable. With experience working with hundreds of students, advisors are well-equipped to answer your questions. If you’re uncertain about your major or next steps in your journey, they can offer valuable insights to help you move forward with confidence in your academic pursuits.

University Career Center

The University Career Center, located in the Student Activities Building, offers many professional development resources for all students. As a first-year student, you may take advantage of free headshots, browse the professional clothing closet, or schedule an appointment to have your resume reviewed. Later in your college journey, you might use their private interview rooms for internship interviews or meet regularly with a career advisor to explore potential opportunities. No matter your stage in college, the Career Center’s extensive resources can support you throughout your time at U-M and beyond.

The Shapiro Library

An often underrated resource of U-M is the Shapiro Library, also known as the UgLi (Undergraduate Library). While it is well-known for its vast amount of study spaces, there is much more than what meets the eye. If you need a quiet space to focus, you can book study rooms on the second floor for free online. For media projects, the first floor features media production rooms equipped for podcasting or video recording. The library staff equips you with the training and assistance you need to properly utilize the equipment, making it easily accessible for anyone. The library also provides access to many computers and printers, making studying and printing an ease. And of course, you have full access to books and research materials, which can be incredibly helpful in preparing for essays and class projects.

Concluding Thoughts

Starting your college journey may seem overwhelming at times, but knowing where to find support on campus can make all the difference. The University of Michigan’s vast amount of resources make it much easier to thrive in this new environment as you seek to take on new challenges. My best advice is to take advantage of every resource available at U-M. It will set you up for success in the long run, both academically and personally. Most importantly, remember that you are not alone on this journey, and there is a strong community to support you every step of the way.
