Everything you need to know to have the easiest move possible.
Moving to college is not easy. Planning what to bring, when to bring it, and how you will bring it can all seem overwhelming. However, by considering a few things beforehand, your move-in will go smoothly! Planning how you would like the day to go, enlisting the help of friends and family, and being flexible will allow for an easier transition.
The first major tip for moving day is to plan! Plan as much as you can before arriving on campus. Often, residence halls will only allow for an unloading time of one hour or less. Due to this, having as many items as possible prepared and in place for the initial unloading will be helpful. Look over suggested packing lists, like this list from Housing, or suggestions from those who have already lived on a college campus. This way, you can come with all of your essentials. Nearby stores will likely be very busy and low on stock because most students move to campus during this time. This is vital to consider when deciding what to bring and what to leave at home.
Planning also extends beyond your packing list, however, as you will need to sign up for a time slot during which you are to arrive on campus, park, and begin to move in. Knowing what time works best for you is crucial, as you are often limited to an hour. If it is harder to be productive in the morning, it may be best to opt for an afternoon time slot, and if you prefer mornings, then do not hesitate to grab a morning time!
Another major tip is to bring help, if possible. Make a day of it, if you can! Asking family and friends for help when moving into your residence hall will not only make it easier for you but also for them as they can rest easy once they see and help you settle into your space. Multiple trips to and from the car, truck, or van will likely be needed, and the more help that you have, the easier it will be. Leaning on those around you, helping other first-year students, and asking for help at your residence hall’s community center is also beneficial, as you build bonds this way. Remember that other first-year students in your building are going through something similar!
The fact that others around you are going through something similar is important. Because of the influx of students, Ann Arbor gets busy and can be hectic! Take time delays into account and be flexible. Stores get busy, hallways feel cramped, and the campus can feel extra overwhelming. This is OK – most people feel this way! Being flexible, however, can make the transition a bit easier. Things will settle down just as you settle in.
The last piece of advice is to simply soak it all in and do not take small moments for granted. Thank those who helped you transition to campus and make the most of it. Moving as a first-year student does not happen often, so do not let the moment pass. Meet your neighbors, befriend your roommate, and relish in the early moments of campus life!
