Free Things To Do in the Fall

Ann Arbor is a vibrant city known for its rich culture, historic landmarks, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Whether you're a student, a visitor, or a local, there are plenty of activities you can enjoy without spending a dime. As an out-of-state senior, I’ve definitely taken advantage of my favorite season here, and you should too! Here's a guide to some of the best free things to do in Ann Arbor.

Student Events

As a college town, Ann Arbor offers a wealth of events. Many of these activities are free and open to the public. From athletic events, film screenings, and art exhibits to student concerts, there’s always something happening. The university’s Central Campus is a hub for these events, with venues like the Michigan Union, Rackham Auditorium, and Hill Auditorium regularly hosting performances and talks by notable figures.

You can also check out the student-run Michigan Daily for event listings, which cover everything from open mic nights to public gallery exhibitions. Especially during the school year, you’ll find a packed calendar of happenings that are perfect for students and visitors alike.

Main Street Area

Ann Arbor’s Main Street is the heart of the city’s downtown district, and it's a great spot to explore on foot. Stroll along the lively streets to window shop at quirky boutiques, independent bookstores, and local art galleries. Many stores also host free community events, like book signings or art shows.

Street performers are often found playing live music, adding to the vibrant energy of the area. You can also enjoy the seasonal events on Main Street, like the A2 Artoberfest, which draws artists and visitors from around the world. While you may not leave with a purchase, the sights and atmosphere are enough to make Main Street a must-visit.

The Arb

Nichols Arboretum, or "The Arb" as it's known by locals, is one of the most beloved outdoor spaces in Ann Arbor. Managed by the University of Michigan, this sprawling park offers scenic hiking trails, lush gardens, and peaceful views of the Huron River. It’s the perfect place for a nature walk, a quiet afternoon, or a picnic. In the fall, the changing leaves make the Arb a stunning backdrop for a leisurely hike or a quiet escape from the bustling campus.

Explore the Law Quad

The University of Michigan’s Law Quadrangle is undoubtedly one of the most architecturally stunning spots in Ann Arbor. With its Gothic-style buildings, lush green lawns, and peaceful courtyard, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic. The quad offers a serene environment, perfect for reading a book, people-watching, or simply relaxing in the shade.

The Law Quad is open to the public, and during nice weather, it’s common to see students, tourists, and locals lounging on the grass or exploring the beautiful stone archways. You can also take a short self-guided tour to admire the historical significance of the area, with plaques and information posted around the quad.

Cider Mills

No trip to Ann Arbor in the fall would be complete without a visit to one of the area’s cider mills. While many offer paid attractions like hayrides or corn mazes, visiting these picturesque spots is completely free. You can enjoy a walk through apple orchards, watch the cider-making process, and breathe in the crisp autumn air.

Some of the most popular cider mills near Ann Arbor include Dexter Cider Mill, the oldest continuously operating cider mill in Michigan, and Wiard's Orchard. While the food and drinks aren’t free, the ambiance and experience of walking through a mill on a fall day certainly are.

In Closing

Ann Arbor’s blend of nature, culture, and community spirit means there are endless free activities to explore. Whether you're attending a student event, wandering through downtown, hiking at the Arb, enjoying a quiet afternoon at the Law Quad, or visiting a cider mill, you’re bound to discover something new and exciting in this lively city. The best things in life really are free, especially in Ann Arbor.
