Get ready to launch your career – even from your first day – as a student at the University of Michigan. Here’s just a sampling of some of the best and most interesting opportunities that Michigan provides you as you translate your major and your interests into a fulfilling and rewarding career.
International Opportunities Career Fair, Public Service Career Fair, Social Impact Career Fair, Engineering Career Fair, Consulting and Finance Career Fair... the list goes on and on. Scattered throughout the academic year, career fairs are critical opportunities for you to connect with potential employers face-to-face and market yourself. Companies and recruiters join the fairs specifically because they are looking for talented Michigan students (which means you can attend with confidence!)
Immersions with the University Career Center
Immersions are short day trips to corporate offices that give you the chance to see a workspace and speak with employees. There are usually several companies that are on the itinerary, all around a target industry. For example, one recent Immersion took students interested in working in the sports and entertainment industry to New York City, where they were able to visit with the New York Mets, Madison Square Garden, and iHeartMedia. On site, you will have the opportunity to network with current employees, work through case studies, and find out about employment opportunities.
Through both virtual and in-person workshops, you can invest in your career by strengthening essential pieces of your portfolio. From resume reviews to a crash course in networking on LinkedIn, the Opportunity Hub’s workshops and professional coaches will make sure that you are prepared to present your strengths and skills be it online, on paper, or in person.
Want to practice for your upcoming interview? The Career Center can help ensure that you are prepared and polished by walking you through a mock interview. From working through the most commonly asked questions to helping you brainstorm how to answer questions with strong examples from your experiences, the Career Center will help you develop a strategy that you can use to interview well.
Also through the University Career Center, the Clothes Closet is your free source of business professional clothing and shoes. You can make an appointment to shop the Closet or go to one of the many scheduled events that the Career Center puts on to provide access. With the assistance of the Clothes Closet, you can confidently walk into interviews and networking events knowing you look professional and amazing.
JCPenney Suit Up Events
Several times each year, the university partners with JCPenney at Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall to make sure that students are able to get professional and business professional clothing for a great price. With clothes up to 70% off, you can take advantage of these events to polish off your look and walk into that interview confidently. You can also take the bus for free (with your U-M ID) to the mall!
There’s always a lot going on around career development at the University of Michigan. Handshake does the organizing work for you.
