Your go-to guide for the upcoming cold weather.
Temperate fall weather is still here at the moment, but colder days are ahead: Winter in Ann Arbor is both beautiful and relentless. Luckily there’s some time now before it gets too chilly, but it’s always ideal to plan ahead. Between rushing to classes and braving the windy chills, it’s easy to feel worn out by the cold. Thankfully, there are plenty of warm, inviting spots around the city to escape and unwind. Whether you’re looking for a quiet study nook or a cozy place to relax with friends, here are some of my favorites to retreat from the winter weather.
Hatcher Library Reading Room
There’s something almost magical about the Hatcher Library Reading Room in the winter. With towering bookshelves and massive windows, it feels like you’ve stepped into a different world. The quiet atmosphere is perfect for focusing on schoolwork, but it’s also great for just sitting back with a good book. The ambiance of the grand wooden tables and lamps offers a serene environment that can make even the most daunting study sessions just a little more manageable. Plus, when it’s freezing outside, there’s no better feeling than settling into a cozy library space for hours.
Lab Café
Lab Café is one of my favorite spots to escape the cold. It’s a little more minimalist, but that doesn’t make it any less cozy. The aesthetic is clean and modern, but it still feels warm and welcoming. What I love most about Lab is how their coffee always tastes like it’s brewed just for you. They have a lot of unique blends, so if you’re into trying new flavors, you’re definitely in luck. On a freezing day, grabbing a warm drink and sitting by the big windows while Ann Arbor freezes over is oddly peaceful. Plus, it’s just steps away from Central Campus and State Street, so it’s the perfect stop between classes.
State Theatre
If you’re looking for a classic Ann Arbor experience, the State Theatre on State Street itself is a must-visit. With its vintage charm and iconic neon sign, this place feels like stepping back in time. On a winter evening, there’s nothing better than catching a new film or a cult classic in their cozy, dark theaters. The seating is comfortable, the popcorn is fresh, and the atmosphere makes for a perfect escape from the chilly breezes. Whether you're going solo or with friends, it’s a relaxing way to spend a winter night and take a much-needed study break.
Potbelly Sandwich Shop
Right on State Street again, Potbelly is an awesome casual spot to warm up after (or in between) a full day of classes. Their toasty sandwiches hit the spot on a cold day, and the variety means there’s something for everyone. The atmosphere inside is always lively, with people grabbing lunch or catching up over hot cups of soup and warm sandwiches. The lighting and wooden decor give it a homey feel, and their famous milkshakes are just as good in the winter as they are in the summer (though maybe opt for something hot this time of year). It’s a perfect place to unwind, refuel your body, and stay out of the cold.
Literati Bookstore
Literati Bookstore is an absolute gem in downtown Ann Arbor, and it’s an amazing destination year-round, especially in the winter. The bookstore’s cozy, dim atmosphere makes it a great place to browse for a new novel or simply enjoy the quiet warmth. The vibe is peaceful, with natural light and views of downtown Ann Arbor. If you’re in the area, you may as well take a stroll down Main Street under the festive lights they always put up as well. The store also sells journals and colorful pens, so if you’re looking to start a new wellness habit, Literati should be on your bucket list.
Comet Coffee (Nickels Arcade)
Tucked inside the historic Nickels Arcade, Comet Coffee is a concealed, sneaky find in Ann Arbor. The space may be small, but it’s packed with charm and character. The coffee is known to be some of the best in town, with a selection that’s carefully crafted for true coffee lovers. On a cold winter day, stepping into Nickels Arcade and finding Comet Coffee feels like discovering a secret cozy corner. The seating is limited, but if you’re lucky enough to grab a spot, it’s perfect for sipping a hot drink while taking in the arcade’s unique architecture. The old-world charm of the arcade paired with the warmth of a great cup of coffee or tea makes this a must-visit when the temperatures drop. Plus, Nickel’s Arcade has a major Harry Potter essence going on that you don’t want to miss out on!
